Brenda Mitchell: Body Party [Full Album + Bonus] (1978)

DISCO SUSPENSE & MURDER Part 2: BRENDA MITCHELL - DON'T YOU KNOW 1978 feat. The Sweethearts Of Sigma By Soren Jensen: Following on my previous post, here is the second album recorded by Tunesian-French singer Chantal Sitruk. Her first album ended up being released credited to Michele and promoted by a black model, due to Chantal herself serving time in prison. With that album being a big disco smash in the US, her producer Pierre Jaubert recorded a second album on Chantal in 1978 (presumably she was out of jail by then). While the basic rhythm tracks were recorded in Paris, the tapes were sent to Philadelphia where once again The Sweethearts Of Sigma laid down the backing vocals. The album was mixed by John Custer and the single Body Party featured uncredited synth work by Patrick Cowley who would soon achieve fame with his work on Sylvester's You Make Me Feel Mighty Real before his untimely death of AIDS in 1982. For whatever reason Chantal was not credited on this recor

DISCO SUSPENSE & MURDER Part 1: MICHELE - LOVE MAGIC 1977 feat. The Sweethearts Of Sigma By Soren Jensen: A favorite album of mine with a very strange background! Tunesian-born, Paris-based Chantal Sitruk had her recording debut in the early 70s with a lovely French single, Juste un petit peu de soleil (Just A Little Bit Of Sun) and did the odd bit of session work here and there before she was literally spotted in the street by producer Pierre Jaubert (1929-2017) who wanted to record a disco album with her. The resulting LP was sent to Tom Moulton in the States who recorded the Sweethearts of Sigma for the backing vocals before remixing the entire album. However, before the album went into the pressing plant, Chantal was charged with possession of drugs and had to serve prison time, and Jaubert decided to go ahead with the album release anyway. The artist name was changed to Michele and a black model was hired for photo shoots and TV performances. The album was a big disco hit,

SPRING AFFAIR / BAD GIRLS – Donna Summer – (1976/1979)

Image
Donna Summer , stage name of La Donna Adrian Gaines (Boston, December 31, 1948 - Venice, May 17, 2012), was an American singer. Her notoriety is mainly due to a series of musical successes in the seventies that earned her the title of "Queen of Disco". Donna Summer represents a rarity in the disco music scene of the seventies, since her career began well before the sudden popularity of the music genre and continued afterwards. Although she was one of the best known artists of that period, her repertoire did not end in disco music, but included R&B, rock and gospel pieces, which earned her a Grammy award in each category. His production is still acclaimed by modern critics and is one of the few disco singers revalued by current rock critics. Spring Affair (Four Seasons of Love) - 197 6 Four Seasons of Love   (album that also includes the single Spring Affair) is the fourth album by American singer Donna Summer, released on 11 October 1976 by the Casablanca labels. However, the entire album "Once Upon A Time" (all cuts) had previously enjoyed a five-week run at No. 1 beginning December 17, 1977 on the National Disco Action Top 40 which is now referred to as the Billboard Dance Songs Chart. Three weeks following the peak of "Rumour Has It," Donna's mainstream pop breakthrough hit, "Last Dance," was released and the hits just kept on coming from that m

Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edward's pet group. They previously recorded with The Big Apple Band and appeared in songs such as "I'm doin' fine now" (New York City) and "A Fifth of Beethoven" (Walter Murphy). "Dance, dance, dance (Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah)" is an archetypal disco song with a thumping bassline that can't easily be beaten.  "Everybody dance" is a good follow-up, listen to the amazing LP bassline. Much covered in the 70's and 90's; even by The Players Association. "Le Freak" was a very big seller and spent 6 weeks at no. 1 in the US charts - returned in the 80's as "Jack le Freak". Further disco releases were "I want your love", "Good times", "My forbidden lover", and "My feet keep dancing". Notable is "Good times"; an oft-sampled bassline (The Sugarhill Gang especially).

In 1975 she released the single "Love Power" a  cover version  of a 1967 hit by The Sandpebbles, written by Teddy Vann, and later made famous as part of the repertoire of  Luther Vandross . The single was backed with "Drifter", never included in any album and an example of the pre-disco Moroder-Bellotte production, similar to Donna Summer's "Lady of the night" material. In April 1976, Kelly turned to  disco  with the single "Trouble-Maker" and released an album by the same name. The album contained five tracks, including an extended version of "Love Power".  In 1977, she released  Zodiac Lady,  a controversial album that  Casablanca Records , during the disco heyday, refused at first to release. [ citation needed ]  Imports from Italy swamped the international dance floors, creating a hit for the title track and songs such as "Love Sign". This album spawned a twelve-inch single, "Zodiacs," which had major club

Alicia Myers

Image
A performer since childhood, R&B artist  Alicia Myers  won a talent contest in her native Detroit at the age of 10, when she and her brother  Jackie  dueted on a cover of  Ashford & Simpson 's "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," a Motown classic popularized by  Marvin Gaye  and  Tammi Terrell . The Myers siblings performed in bands together, but  Jackie  eventually joined  Chairmen of the Board , while  Alicia  became an integral member, a songwriter, and occasional front person, in  Al Hudson & the Partners . She made an instant impact in the group as the co-writer and co-lead vocalist of the 1979 single "You Can Do It." After a group name change to  One Way , she continued to contribute until 1981, when she made her solo debut with MCA -- the same label to which  One Way  was signed. From 1981 through 1984, she released four albums of sophisticated, funk-laced R&B:  Alicia ,  Alicia Again ,  I Fooled You This Time , and  I Appreciate . Thr

Pattie Brooks - Got Tu Go Disco

Pattie Brooks from the Casablanca Record & Filmworks disco years (1977 - 1979)

Image
About Pattie from Casablanca Record & Filmworks disco years In the mid-1970s Brooks came to the attention of disco producer Simon Soussain and her solo recording career was born. Her first of four albums on the Casablanca label was 1977's Love Shook (the album was credited as Pattie Brooks & The Simon Orchestra), and the whole album peaked at #2 on the US Dance Club Play Chart. Pattie remained with Soussain and in 1978 recorded her biggest club hit, "After Dark". This was selected to be part of the soundtrack to the film Thank God It's Friday and as the soundtrack topped the club play charts, Pattie's contribution was up there with friend and stablemate Donna Summer's "Last Dance" as the most celebrated tracks. "After Dark" was the mainstay of Pattie's second album (now with sole billing) Our Ms Brooks. In 1979 Pattie moved away from Soussain as her third album Party Girl was produced by Bunny Sigler of Instant Funk and Salsoul

Madleen Kane — "Cherchez Pas"

Image
I Came Here to Dance Madleen Kane is just that Swedish model-turned-disco-diva that we all know.  This track comes from Trema, one of the most successful independent French record labels during the 70s.  It was released in 1980 and definitely contains traces of that 80s dance vibe that we've all come to know and love on and off the dancefloor.  There's also some cool horns, catchy multilingual vocals and some rad hair-metal-esque guitar riffs. Enjoy.

Alicia Myers with Al Hudson & The Partners - You Can Do It (1979)

Image
The striking vocal play between the sweet soulful sound of Al Hudson against the full throated gospel glory of Alicia Myers turns this song into terrific disco. Funky as hell, the music track is simple but anthemic, "You Can Do It" is just what you need to hear right now. Disco is all about celebrating community and being on the up, two things that seem to be in short supply these days. I first heard this song in the summer of 1979 and the original surprising intro made my disco buddy, Mona put her beer down, so I did too and we marveled at the newest sound while dancing to this new funky disco with a slow burnin groove that could not be stopped. A run to the DJ booth and I got the name of the band ONE WAY and the following Friday I had a copy of the LP. Reading the liner notes I found a wealth of information about the band and that it was written by Alicia Meyers and Kevin McCord. Being an ex-Detroit boy, I am impressed with the amount of talent that city has provided to mus
