Donna Summer - Try Me, I Know We Can Make It (1976)

Image
"Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" is a song by American singer and songwriter Donna Summer from her third studio album A Love Trilogy album released in 1976. Summer's breakthrough had come in the form of the disco song "Love to Love You Baby" which in its entirety lasted almost seventeen minutes and took up the entire first side of the album of the same name. Due to its success (and also its success as a 12" maxi single) the format was repeated with the next album and with this song. In fact, "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" actually lasted even longer than "Love To Love You Baby", clocking in at eighteen minutes. Edited versions were also released on the 7" single format. The song peaked at number eighty on the American pop chart and number thirty-five on the soul chart.[1] It was more popular with disco audiences, however, becoming Summer's second number one single on the dance chart in May 1976 and remaining atop that chart for ...

Ellie Hope and Liquid Gold

Image
Ellie Hope and Liquid Gold     Two of the "disco-era's" biggest hits came from a group that  never  appeared in America. The U.K. based  Liquid Gold  consisted of Wally Rothe (drums), Ray Knott (bass), Syd Twynham (lead guitar) and Ellie Hope (vocals).          Ray met Ellie in 1976 when both auditioned as replacements for  Babe Ruth.  Babe Ruth had four albums between 1972-1975. Ray and Ellie contributed to  Babe Ruth's  last album  "Kid Stuff,"  before it disbanded.      Ray and Ellie then recruited Syd and Wally to form the  Dream Coupe.  The four played local bars and pubs doing mainly cover tunes while continuing to write there own material and seeking out a recording contract. Producer Adrian Baker happened to catch the group and was so intrigued by Ellie's vocals that he signed the group to Creole records and a one year contract.    ...

DISCO DELIVERY #11: PHYLICIA ALLEN - JOSEPHINE SUPERSTAR (1978, CASABLANCA)

Image
Side One Medley: St Louis, Broadway, Star Of Paris Around The World Side Two Medley: J'ai deux amours, Josephine Superstar If you have an aversion to all things camp, you might want to skip today's entry. Then again if you did, you probably wouldn't be looking at a disco music blog.. In case you're wondering, yes that is in fact  Mrs. Huxtable  AKA Tony Award winner  Phylicia Allen Bowles Willis Rashad  imitating one of  Josephine Baker's  iconic images on the cover. Essentially this album - " Josephine Superstar " (a play on " Jesus Christ Superstar " perhaps?) is a kind of truly over-the-top, broadway style, discofied musical tribute to Josephine Baker herself.. Was Ms. Baker turning in her grave? I'll let you be the judge.. Mind you, I'm not sure what they were thinking when they decided to do this album. Looking at it now, I don't think something like this would stand a chance of being released today. It's about as likely ...

Cindy Bullens - Too Close to Home (1979)

Image
Cindy tried to make it big in the United States and worldwide to make that song a disco-flavored pop hit, entitled, "Too Close to Home" , but her song, co-written by herself and her friend Mark Doyle didn't have enough promotion. Then it died too soon since it got eaten up by an indecent song, entitled, "An Englishman in New York" , mistakenly by Godley & Creme . That's why she felt upset and disappointed when she never wanted to have her song receive more airplay rather than less. Her decent song should have been played at the discotheque instead of an indecent song, mistakenly done by Poussez , entitled, "Come On and Do It with Me" with too much moaning, groaning and cursing that ruined all the wholesomeness.  Sorry that Miss Bullens would have hit the big time. Her song "Too Close to Home" should have been played more and more often on pop radio stations due to the color of her white skin. Her song should have been the winne...

SPRING AFFAIR / BAD GIRLS – Donna Summer – (1976/1979)

Image
Donna Summer , stage name of La Donna Adrian Gaines (Boston, December 31, 1948 - Venice, May 17, 2012), was an American singer. Her notoriety is mainly due to a series of musical successes in the seventies that earned her the title of "Queen of Disco". Donna Summer represents a rarity in the disco music scene of the seventies, since her career began well before the sudden popularity of the music genre and continued afterwards. Although she was one of the best known artists of that period, her repertoire did not end in disco music, but included R&B, rock and gospel pieces, which earned her a Grammy award in each category. His production is still acclaimed by modern critics and is one of the few disco singers revalued by current rock critics. Spring Affair (Four Seasons of Love) - 197 6 Four Seasons of Love   (album that also includes the single Spring Affair) is the fourth album by American singer Donna Summer, released on 11 October 1976 by the Casablanca labels. Bad ...

Chic - Dance, Dance, Dance (1977) - with Alfa & Norma Jean on vocals

Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edward's pet group. They previously recorded with The Big Apple Band and appeared in songs such as "I'm doin' fine now" (New York City) and "A Fifth of Beethoven" (Walter Murphy). "Dance, dance, dance (Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah)" is an archetypal disco song with a thumping bassline that can't easily be beaten.  "Everybody dance" is a good follow-up, listen to the amazing LP bassline. Much covered in the 70's and 90's; even by The Players Association. "Le Freak" was a very big seller and spent 6 weeks at no. 1 in the US charts - returned in the 80's as "Jack le Freak". Further disco releases were "I want your love", "Good times", "My forbidden lover", and "My feet keep dancing". Notable is "Good times"; an oft-sampled bassline (The Sugarhill Gang especially).

Roberta Kelly from the Oasis and Casablanca Record & Filmworks disco years

Image
In 1975 she released the single "Love Power" a  cover version  of a 1967 hit by The Sandpebbles, written by Teddy Vann, and later made famous as part of the repertoire of  Luther Vandross . The single was backed with "Drifter", never included in any album and an example of the pre-disco Moroder-Bellotte production, similar to Donna Summer's "Lady of the night" material. In April 1976, Kelly turned to  disco  with the single "Trouble-Maker" and released an album by the same name. The album contained five tracks, including an extended version of "Love Power".  In 1977, she released  Zodiac Lady,  a controversial album that  Casablanca Records , during the disco heyday, refused at first to release. [ citation needed ]  Imports from Italy swamped the international dance floors, creating a hit for the title track and songs such as "Love Sign". This album spawned a twelve-inch single, "Zodiacs," which had major club...

Alicia Myers

Image
A performer since childhood, R&B artist  Alicia Myers  won a talent contest in her native Detroit at the age of 10, when she and her brother  Jackie  dueted on a cover of  Ashford & Simpson 's "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," a Motown classic popularized by  Marvin Gaye  and  Tammi Terrell . The Myers siblings performed in bands together, but  Jackie  eventually joined  Chairmen of the Board , while  Alicia  became an integral member, a songwriter, and occasional front person, in  Al Hudson & the Partners . She made an instant impact in the group as the co-writer and co-lead vocalist of the 1979 single "You Can Do It." After a group name change to  One Way , she continued to contribute until 1981, when she made her solo debut with MCA -- the same label to which  One Way  was signed. From 1981 through 1984, she released four albums of sophisticated, funk-laced R&B:  Alicia ,...
