Lipps Inc - Funkytown (1979) - with Cynthia Johnson singing the lead



Today in 1980, Lipps Inc went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Funkytown". The disco hit was also a No. 1 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and The Netherlands. It reached No. 2 in the U.K. It was written by musician, composer, and record producer Steven Greenberg and sung by Cynthia Johnson. Fun fact: Greenberg reportedly wrote the song while the band was living in Minneapolis with dreams of moving to New York.

Ellie Hope and Liquid Gold     Two of the "disco-era's" biggest hits came from a group that  never  appeared in America. The U.K. based  Liquid Gold  consisted of Wally Rothe (drums), Ray Knott (bass), Syd Twynham (lead guitar) and Ellie Hope (vocals).          Ray met Ellie in 1976 when both auditioned as replacements for  Babe Ruth.  Babe Ruth had four albums between 1972-1975. Ray and Ellie contributed to  Babe Ruth's  last album  "Kid Stuff,"  before it disbanded.      Ray and Ellie then recruited Syd and Wally to form the  Dream Coupe.  The four played local bars and pubs doing mainly cover tunes while continuing to write there own material and seeking out a recording contract. Diva Gray and Oyster - St Tropez 1979

Diva Gray (Deborah Gray her real name) vocalist and chorus girl who began her professional career with Harry Belafonte along with Vivian Cherry, Gwen Guthrie and Lani Groves participated in numerous projects. This was leveraged by Kenny Lehman for the Chic project. She also worked for Jacques Fred Petrus (Peter Jacques Band) as a backup singer, this project attracted the attention of Columbia executives and led to the Oyster Project. This produced a solo LP, Diva Gray and Oyster, of which her song St. Tropez was a hit on all the discotheques.
